A small class group and real-world practice create the perfect learning environment

Living and studying at the Civil Aviation Management Institute of China, our students will partake in daily intensive language lessons instructed by native speakers. The daily itinerary will include mentally and physically recreational activities such as one-on-one conversation sessions with local Chinese teachers, cultural arts & crafts activities, martial arts, kite making, paper cutting, cooking classes, Chinese knot tying, calligraphy. 

We will also fly to world famous Dunhuang, which creates a rare opportunity to visit the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring. There, we will visit exquisite murals and statues, Dunhuang UNESCO Global Geopark,  Yardang, Yumen Pass, Hecang city, Great Wall of Han, Yangguan Scenic Spot, Dunhuang Photoelectric Expo Park & we will watch the large musical show “ You Jian  Dunhuang ”. Heavily immersed in Chinese language, culture and cuisine, this is a trip that promises a summer that is both mentally stimulating and physically rewarding!

Day 1: 

We will land in Beijing international airport, take the bus into the city, and drive to campus to settle into dorms. after dinner, we will spend our time touring the campus and I will give everyone a basic orientation.

Day 2-7:

We will wake up bright and early to partake in a fun traditional Tai Chi and Diablo (Chinese yoyo) class in the morning. Then students will attend six hours of class. University instructors and teachers will design the course based on the students’ learning needs in oral proficiency and other practical aspects of the Chinese language. 

After class each day, students will be encouraged to interact and communicate with local people, tasting different styles of Chinese cuisine, all while touring around Beijing and the surrounding area as well as learning about the rich history and culture.

Day 8:

After a week of classes, we will spend a day at  The National Museum of Chinese History and watch the world famous Kung Fu legend show – “Chunyi The Legend of  Kung Fu” 

 

Day  9 – 15:

Same daily schedule as Days 2-7.

Day 16:

In the morning, the students will take a final exam to evaluate their proficiency and then head over to the Universal Studios Beijing Theme Park/ Beijing Happy Valley. 

Day 17- 20

We will travel by Airplane from Beijing international airport to Dunhuang Mogao International Airport of Gansu Province. We will arrive in Dunhuang in the afternoon, and settle in for the day. 

For the next four days, we will explore Dunhuang to visit the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring, Experience of the ancient murals, visit World famous of exquisite murals and statues, Dunhuang UNESCO Global Geopark – Yardang, Yumen Pass, Hecang city, Great Wall of Han, Yangguan Scenic Spot, Dunhuang Photoelectric Expo Park & watch Large musical show “ You Jian  Dunhuang ” and Experience to   process of making the Bamboo Slip , Wear Han Costume and Dunhuang Museum etc.

Day 21 

After eating breakfast at the hotel, we will head back to the Dunhuang Mogao International airport. We will travel from Dunhuang back to Hong Kong international airport in the afternoon of the 5th of July.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: FOR AP STUDENTS

The AP Chinese Language and Culture exam consists of two aspects: Chinese language and Chinese culture. This intensive language immersion trip aims to provide AP students opportunities to further develop their proficiency across the full range of Chinese language skills as well as experience first-hand the richness of Chinese culture. Yuen Laoshi and Savannah will assess each student’s Chinese language levels to customize their learning materials’ context, as well as activities that focus on their individual learning needs. Instructional materials and activities will be carefully selected and designed to support the students’ overall proficiency.

Beijing is known for its rich Chinese culture and inheritance, this is an excellent opportunity to enhance students’ understanding of Chinese culture while learning the language and engaging students in an exploration of both contemporary and historical Chinese culture.

Daily and weekend excursions will allow students to practice and enhance their Putonghua oral and listening skills with local people and learn to read signs/instructions in and around the city. Moreover, the AP students will be given an opportunity to take a leadership role to enhance not only their leadership knowledge and experience, but also to increase their interactions between the students from different age groups.

  • Be familiar with the format of AP Chinese Language and Culture exam
  • Adapt strategies for AP Chinese Language and Culture exam
  • Become better prepared for the different question formats in the exam
  • Support their practice in Pinyin system and typing in Chinese
  • Demonstrate their understanding in writing and topics discussions
  • Acquire better understanding of social patterns, traditions, art, medicine etc.
  • Promote the appropriate use of Chinese language in cultural settings
  • Increase their sense of responsibility

METHODOLOGY:

  • One-on-one conversation practices as well as role-playing
  • Observe & experience the rich culture by interacting with local people
  • Practice Mandarin in various authentic settings
  • Classroom instructions and discussions
  • Read and write about authentic materials, such as public signs, posters, menus etc.
  • Adapt multi-media lessons to enhance effective learning
  • Assigning leadership roles for the AP students

ASSESSMENT:

  • AP Chinese Language and Culture model practice tests
  • Frequent formative assessment of students’ development in listening, reading, speaking and writing to improve their language proficiencies.
